The funding for the jobs was introduced by UMass Lowell’s Rist Institute for Sustainability and Electrical power (Increase), a collaboration in between the university’s Climate Adjust Initiative, Electrical power Engineering System and Place of work of Sustainability. Started in 2019 with the guidance of UMass Lowell graduate UMass Lowell Brian Rist ’77 and his spouse Kim, the institute not too long ago named its inaugural course of fellows to honor and advance their do the job. They are Economics Assistant Prof. Kelly Hellman, along with Kerry Candlen, a plastics engineering significant from Westford, and Maria Fonseca Guzman, a chemical engineering big from Roswell, Ga.
Hellman was awarded a $15,000 school fellowship to develop a new course, “The Economics of Local weather Improve,” which will study how the phenomenon is influencing the financial system, human overall health and the natural environment. Learners will also research economists’ predictions for foreseeable future impacts in the course.

“If profitable, this project can contact on everyone’s every day daily life, increasing the natural environment by stopping plastic waste from getting into landfills or becoming incinerated,” Candlen stated.
Candlen programs to total her bachelor’s diploma in plastics engineering this month and keep on on at UMass Lowell to pursue an highly developed diploma by way of the university’s Bachelor’s-to-Master’s program. She will carry out the research with her college mentor, Plastics Engineering Assistant Prof. Wan-Ting Chen.
Fonseca Guzman received a $5,000 fellowship from Rise to support investigate she is conducting with UMass Lowell Chemistry Assistant Prof. Michael Ross.
