Newsom Proposes ‘Firewall’ to Protect Abortion Rights in California

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday proposed setting up a statewide constitutional “firewall” around abortion legal rights, responding to the leaked draft view that exhibits the Supreme Court is set to overturn Roe v. Wade.

“California will build a firewall all-around this proper in our point out structure,” Newsom stated in a joint statement with California’s State Senate President Toni Atkins and State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and shared by his business office on Twitter

The assertion said California lawmakers will suggest a constitutional modification to “enshrine the proper to select.”

“We are unable to have confidence in SCOTUS to guard the appropriate to abortion, so we will do it ourselves,” Newsom included in a tweet. “Women of all ages will stay shielded listed here.”

The leaked draft feeling attained by Politico and posted late Monday appears to display that the Supreme Courtroom is poised to overturn the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that presented females with the constitutional ideal to get an abortion. 

The unparalleled leak is not the Court’s remaining ruling, which is expected to occur in late June amid the major scenario Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Group.
