Single Mother Scholarships and Financial Help

Lisa R. Parker

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 13 million single parents in the United States. An overwhelming portion of these parents (84%) are single mothers with low income.

A large problem with single parenthood is income. It is much harder to raise a family on your own than it is with a partner because you will have to provide for your family as well as take care of household duties and caring for your children.

Fortunately, whether you are a stay at home mom or a working mom with a child, there are many different ways to get financial help in the form of grants and scholarships to get a high paying job. This article will provide some tips and advice on the types of financial aid available.

For low income single mothers, a scholarship can enable you to get higher paying job with benefits such as family health and dental plans. There are many institutions that award scholarships for single mothers such as the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation can provide a grant of up to $2000 to fund college courses which has been a great help to many.

Another way to get a scholarship is through merit based allocation. This is where you are assessed on a case-by-case basis based on past academic records.

If you are looking for grants and other types of monetary assistance to help your family. Government programs such as TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and LIHEAP (Low Income Housing Energy Assistance) can help you with paying bills and offer subsidies.

Other types of financial help for women include the Federal Pell Grant which is determined by the U.S. Department of Education and HUD grants for housing assistance.

Hopefully this article will have given a good starting point of where to look in order to get financial help quickly. Please note that you may not get accepted on your first application and, if this is the case, you should ask for their reasons and continue to try other organisations as it is very likely that you will awarded a grant or scholarship eventually.
